East Boston Savings Bank’s Charitable Foundation
awards $146,000 in grants to community organizations

The East Boston Savings Bank Charitable Foundation has made grants totaling $146,000 for the 2011 distribution year. EBSB Chairman & CEO, Richard Gavegnano and EBSB President, Deborah Jackson hosted a breakfast for the deserving recipients at the Bank’s headquarters in Peabody. Organizations receiving grants include nine from Essex County, three from Middlesex County and nineteen from Suffolk County.

The 2011 community organizations awarded grants are: America Scores, Jamaica Plain; Caritas Communities, Braintree; Chelsea Revere Winthrop Elder Services, Chelsea; Citizens for Adequate Housing, Inc. Peabody; Cristo Rey Boston High School, Boston; Crossroads, East Boston; Danvers Educational Enrichment Program; East Boston Adult Education Center; East Boston Social Center; East Boston YMCA; Everybody Wins, Boston; Family & Children Services, Lynn; Generations, Inc., Boston; Haven From Hunger, Peabody; Horizons for Homeless Children, Roxbury; Hospice of the North Shore, Danvers; Housing Families, Inc, Malden; Joint Committee for Children’s Healthcare, Everett; Little Folks Community Daycare Centers, East Boston; Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless, Lynn; Nancamp, Marblehead; Neighborhood House Charter School, Dorchester; Neighborhood of Affordable Housing ((NOAH), East Boston; Paris Street Recreation Center Community Council, East Boston; Pine Street Inn, Boston; Salesian Boys & Girls Club, East Boston; St. Mary’s School, Lynn; VNA of Middlesex East, Wakefield; Wellspring House, Inc. America SCORES empowers students in urban communities using soccer, writing, creative expression, and service-learning. With teamwork as the unifying value, America SCORES Boston inspires youth to lead healthy lifestyles, be engaged, and become agents of change in their communities. They will use the grant money to support Alumni Leadership Academy through The Rodman Ride.

Caritas Communities serves the housing needs of low-income individuals through the development and long term management of affordable rooming houses. By rehabilitating existing properties and building on vacant land, they improve neighborhoods while providing much needed housing. Caritas will use the grant money to fund improvements at houses in Everett, Melrose, Medford and Wakefield.

In 1972, Chelsea Revere Winthrop Elder Services was designated by the state as a Aging Services Access Point and is part of a network of over 27 agencies serving elders throughout the state. The Agency is also designated by the federal government as an Area Agency on Aging. They will use the grant money for Special Needs for elders in the Money Management Program e.g. hearing aids & life lines.

Citizens for Adequate Housing, Inc. was founded in 1983, and works to ends homelessness one family at a time. CAH is a leader in the fight to end homelessness, serving families from the North Shore, eastern Massachusetts, and the Merrimack Valley. Families facing an emergency need of housing will find a temporary home at the Inn Between. They will the grant for funding technology needs (laptops).

Cristo Rey Boston High School is a member of the Cristo Rey Network, a thriving association of 24 high schools that utilize an innovative work-study program to provide affordable, Catholic education to more than 7,000 students nationwide. They will be using the grant money for Capital improvements to the kitchen and HVAC systems at the school.

Crossroads will use the grant money for Playspace Programs for Homeless Children.

Danvers Educational Enrichment Program enriches Danvers Public Schools’ educational process through a unique partnership comprised of schools, community volunteers and businesses. They will be using the grant money for technology campaigns for Danvers High School.

East Boston Adult Education Center The Center was begun in 1972 in the North End of Boston by Professor Dominic Avellani, an Italian immigrant who experienced firsthand the great need for educational services for immigrants and refugees in the Boston Area. They Center teaches English, Citizenship, Computer, and G.E.D. to Italian, Hispanic, Cambodian, Vietnamese and Eastern-European refugees and U.S. school drop-outs. They will use the grant money for the advancement for the Newcomer Youth Program.

East Boston Social Center provide much-needed services for a diverse group of more than 1,000 children, families and senior citizens in its childcare, teen after-school programming, day and overnight camps. The centers open their doors to an additional 29,000 community members by hosting meetings and events. The grant will be used for field trips for Boston Youth Network.

East Boston YMCA is dedicated to improving the health of mind, body, and spirit of individuals and families in greater Boston. They welcome men and women, boys and girls of all incomes, faiths and cultures. They will use the grant money for SAT preparation and the college readiness program.

Everybody Wins is a national literacy and mentoring nonprofit organization that increases children’s opportunities for success in school and in life through one-to-one reading experiences with caring adults. They will be using the grant money to support the Power Lunch Program in East Boston and Everett.

Family & Children Services of Greater Lynn offers a broad base of social services that address the most prevalent needs of a diverse community. It will use the grant money for their TEEN SCENE Drop-In Center Program Support.

Generations, Inc. unites older adults and youth in partnership to strengthen individuals and communities. They will use the grant money to expand and improve the efficiency of Reading Coaches and Classroom Literacy Programs in Revere Elementary Schools.

Haven From Hunger is a private company categorized under Temporary Relief Service. Established in 1987, they will be using the grant money for new computers.

Horizons for Homeless Children is to improve the lives of homeless children and their families. They provide homeless children in Massachusetts with the nurturing, stimulation and opportunities for early education and play that all children need to learn and grow in healthy ways. They will use the grant money to keep Playspaces fully equipped and staffed in Boston, East Boston and Medford.

Hospice of the North Shore provides comprehensive and compassionate care for individuals and families dealing with life-threatening illnesses. It is the largest and most experienced hospice provider in the region. They will use the grant money to purchase supplies and to train volunteers in the Dementia Support Program.

Housing Families, Inc. works to end family homelessness. They provide safe temporary shelter and quality affordable housing, offer individualized supportive services to enrich children’s lives, nurture the potential of each family member, and help families maintain permanent housing. They will use the grant money to underwrite new youth development initiative for teenage boys affected by homelessness.

Joint Committee for Children’s Healthcare is a unique partnership and commitment that has helped hundreds of Everett's children gain access to health care insurance coverage and become more aware of health issues affecting them. They will use the grant money for the Parent University, the Waling School Bus and Walk It Out for Kids.

Little Folks Community Daycare Centers offers child care and a full Pre-school, Pre-K programs for children ages 6 weeks to Kindergarten, after school program for children to 12 years, with a full summer program. They will use the grant money to re-supply and update classrooms with materials, most going to science and math.

Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless was founded in 1981, the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless is committed to ensuring that everyone has a place to call home. They will use the grant money to support “A Bed for Every Child” initiative.

Nancamp offers children dealing with cancer the opportunity to break free for two weeks from the awful pressure in their young lives by participating in a unique summer day camp experience on the ocean on Children’s Island, two fun-filled weeks at the Lynch/van Otterloo Y at Leggs Hill or at Camp Simchah on the Hill at the Jewish Community Center in Marblehead. At no cost to the family. They will use the grant money to sponsor children to attend summer camp.

Neighborhood House Charter School offers a quality education to a diverse community of Boston children through a neighborhood-based school that integrates education with social services and health care programs and to develop and share with other schools innovative practices that improve public education for all students.


NOAH is a multi-service, nonprofit community development corporation that creates and preserves affordable housing opportunities and builds safe and healthy neighborhoods for those most in need and others challenged by the current housing market. It will use the grant for its Foreclosure Education & Counseling Program.

Paris Street Recreation Center Community Council is a private/public partnership between the and the Paris Street Community Center Council, Inc. They offer a variety of services to the community - complete exercise facilities, a swimming pool, youth programs, and other community events. They will use the grant money to support Teen Activity initiative.

Pine Street Inn provides a comprehensive range of programs and services, including housing, outreach, shelter and job training. The ultimate goal for all of our programs is making permanent housing a real possibility for all. They will use the grant money for the Street Outreach Program.

The Salesian Boys & Girls Club has been serving the young people of East Boston, Revere and Winthrop since 1945. It will use the grant money for its Teen Evening Program.

St. Mary’s School in Lynn is a Catholic college-preparatory high school whose rigorous academic and extra-curricular programs encourage young men and women to reach their spiritual, intellectual, moral, physical and creative potential. They will use the grant money for 5 – $1,000 scholarships.

VNA of Middlesex East provides home health care to patients recovering from illness and injury and Visiting Nurse Hospice provides end-of-life care to residents of 28 communities north and northwest of Boston. It will use the grant money to purchase 3 desktop computers.

Wellspring House, Inc. has helped over 1,400 families and individuals take steps to becoming financially self-sufficient and meet their basic needs. They will use the grant money to upgrade computers Medi-Clerk Program.

Work, Inc. works to ensure that all individuals with disabilities have the ability to grow, the right to make choices, access to education, and the opportunity to participate in community life via meaningful work. They will use the grant money to expand Music Programs for individuals with disabilities.

The East Boston Savings Bank Charitable Foundation was established in 1998 by East Boston Savings Bank to provide funding to support charitable causes and community development activities within the communities of EBSB. Since its inception, the Foundation has distributed over $1 million in funding to support many deserving charitable causes and community development activities. To be eligible for a grant, an organization must be a Massachusetts charitable corporation tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code.
